{"id":1664,"date":"2026-04-22T11:29:44","date_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:29:44","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/the-secularist.com\/?p=1664"},"modified":"2026-04-22T11:44:38","modified_gmt":"2026-04-22T11:44:38","slug":"trumps-iran-war-anatomy-of-a-debacle","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/the-secularist.com\/index.php\/2026\/04\/22\/trumps-iran-war-anatomy-of-a-debacle\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump\u2019s Iran War: Anatomy of a Debacle"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>When he declared war on Iran in violation of\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/international-law\">international law<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/us-constitution\">US Constitution<\/a>, President\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/donald-trump\">Donald Trump<\/a>\u00a0announced several objectives. He claims to have won the war, but Iran is emerging as the long-term victor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>No one doubted the capacity of the US armed forces to decimate Iran\u2019s far inferior military force. But to what end?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Israel Prime Minister&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/benjamin-netanyahu\">Benjamin Netanyahu<\/a>&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-war.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">convinced<\/a>&nbsp;Trump that launching the attack would prompt a popular uprising that would lead to the overthrow of Iran\u2019s theocracy. Listening to Netanyahu\u2019s assertion,&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/cia\">CIA<\/a>&nbsp;Director John Ratcliffe called it \u201cfarcical.\u201d Secretary of State and National Security Adviser&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/marco-rubio\">Marco Rubio<\/a>&nbsp;translated that word into language Trump would understand, \u201cIn other words, it\u2019s bullshit.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s bluster isn\u2019t working with Iranian leaders. His threats to commit&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/war-crimes\">war crimes<\/a>&nbsp;dominate news cycles, but they merely reveal to Iran Trump\u2019s desperation to extricate himself from the mess he created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump chose to believe Netanyahu. Announcing the US-Israeli assault, Trump told Iranians that this was their opportunity to reclaim their country. To win the war on Trump\u2019s terms, the Iranian theocracy needed only to survive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The attack killed the Supreme Leader of Iran and top members of the government. But immediately, the serpent grew another head\u2014the Supreme Leader\u2019s son, Mojtaba Khamenei, who had lost his wife and teenage son in the bombing. The new leader is known for deep, long-standing ties to the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) security establishment. His appointment signaled a transition to a more heavily militarized, hard-line, and anti-Western regime.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump calls this \u201cregime change.\u201d By his definition, Admiral Karl D\u00f6nitz succeeding&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/adolf-hitler\">Adolf Hitler<\/a>&nbsp;as head of the German state near the end of World War II constituted regime change too.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The Iran theocracy survived in an even more militant form.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Score: Iran 1, Trump 0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Contain Iran<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump boasted that the war would restrain Iran\u2019s ability to project power:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u201cWe are systematically dismantling the regime\u2019s ability to threaten America or project power outside of their borders,\u201d he&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-transcript-address-iran-war-b5970011fe934dde84d95d650bda56a9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">said<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump then described the destruction of Iran\u2019s navy, air force, missile facilities, and defense industrial base. Those were tactical successes, but the war itself has been a strategic failure.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Iran\u2019s response included attacks on neighboring countries. Even more troubling, it discovered and deployed a powerful new weapon: blocking the Strait of Hormuz. Notwithstanding its decimated navy, Iran now has a choke hold on the global economy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Netanyahu had&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/07\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-war.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">assured<\/a>&nbsp;Trump that the regime would be so weakened from the US-Israeli assault that it would be unable to block the waterway through which one-fifth of the world\u2019s&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.commondreams.org\/tag\/oil\">oil<\/a>&nbsp;flowed. Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Dan Caine flagged the enormous difficulty of securing the strait and the risks of Iran blocking it. But Trump dismissed that possibility on the assumption that the regime would capitulate before that could happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>With the price of oil skyrocketing, Trump has created a new problem for the entire world and powerful leverage for Iran.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Score: Iran 2, Trump 0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>No Nuclear Weapons<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>In his June 2025 attack on Iran, Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2026\/02\/24\/politics\/nuclear-program-iran-trump-strike\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">claimed<\/a>&nbsp;to have \u201cobliterated\u201d its nuclear facilities. Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth went further, saying that not only were the&nbsp;<em>facilities<\/em>&nbsp;obliterated, but so too were Iran\u2019s nuclear&nbsp;<em>ambitions<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Subsequently, Trump took repeated victory laps over the mission:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cIt knocked out their entire potential nuclear capacity.\u201d (July 16)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt\u2019s been obliterated.\u201d (July 31)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe obliterated\u2026 the future nuclear capability of Iran.\u201d (August 18)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cBut I also obliterated Iran\u2019s nuclear hopes, by totally annihilating their enriched uranium.\u201d (September 20)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWell, they don\u2019t have a nuclear program. It was obliterated.\u201d (October 13)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c\u2026completely obliterated Iran\u2019s nuclear capability.\u201d (November 11)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cIt was called Iran and its nuclear capability, and we obliterated that very quickly and strongly and powerfully.\u201d (November 19)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe obliterated their nuclear capability.\u201d (December 11)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cWe knocked out the Iran nuclear threat, and it was obliterated.\u201d (January 8)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c\u2026obliterated Iran\u2019s nuclear enrichment capability.\u201d (January 20)<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201c\u2026achieving total obliteration of the Iran nuclear potential capability\u2014totally obliterated.\u201d (February 13)<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>In defending the launch of the war on February 28, 2026, Trump&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/donald-trump-transcript-address-iran-war-b5970011fe934dde84d95d650bda56a9\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">acknowledged<\/a>&nbsp;that Iran\u2019s nuclear program had not been obliterated after all. Rather, the country was now \u201cright at the doorstep\u201d of having a nuclear bomb. Trump has no strategy for solving that problem either.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s tactics\u2014bombing\u2014won\u2019t work. Knowledgeable experts&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2026\/04\/17\/us\/politics\/trump-iran-nuclear-site.html\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" target=\"_blank\">believe<\/a>&nbsp;that a key Iranian nuclear facility is Pickaxe Mountain, where some of its uranium may be stored. That facility is so far below the ground that even America\u2019s 30,000-pound bunker-buster bombs can\u2019t reach its inner chamber.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump talks about \u201cgoing in\u201d and taking the nuclear material out. But a ground operation to retrieve the material or destroy the facility would entail tremendous risk to those attempting it while providing, at best, an uncertain outcome.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The threat of a nuclear Iran remains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Score: Iran 3, Trump 0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>False Declarations of Victory That Backfire<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s bluster isn\u2019t working with Iranian leaders. His threats to commit war crimes dominate news cycles, but they merely reveal to Iran Trump\u2019s desperation to extricate himself from the mess he created. As a negotiating strategy, it\u2019s counterproductive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Trump\u2019s persistent boasts about tactical victories against Iran\u2019 s military ignore the fundamental strategic fact that Trump has lost the Iran war.
